Tableau Software is an American computer software company headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It produces a family of interactive data visualization products focused on business intelligence. Tableau’s business intelligence software allows anyone to easily connect to data, then visualize and create interactive, sharable dashboards.
Tableau Desktop is a powerful data discovery and exploration application that allows you to answer pressing questions in seconds. There is no need for wizards or complex scripting, anyone who understands the business problem can address it with a visualization of the relevant data. When the analysis is finished, sharing with others is as easy as publishing to Tableau Server.
Tableau offers five main products:
Tableau Desktop – Required to build the data connections and visual images and dashboards.
This is a licensed desktop product that enables the user to develop data visualizations to see patterns, identify trends, and quickly discover visual insights. Users can shift between views with drag-and-drop technology and drill down to see additional details. The software connects to your base data and generates queries for a quick visual display. You can connect to live data, data warehouses, spreadsheets, or blend different data sources together. Visualizations may be shared with others via publishing to Tableau Server (to share within the organization) or Tableau Public Premium (to share publicly on the web) or may be shared with individuals to view in Tableau Reader.
Tableau Server – Required to share visual images and dashboards across the enterprise.
A server based resource anyone can use via browser or mobile solutions. This product allows organizations to share data visualizations created with Tableau Desktop centrally with specific authorized users or groups of users within the organization. It provides live interactive dashboards which can be embedded in enterprise portals.
Tableau Reader – Used to view visualizations built in Tableau Desktop.
Tableau Reader is a free desktop application used to open, view and interact with visualizations built in Tableau Desktop.
Tableau Online is a hosted version of Tableau Server.
Tableau Public is a free desktop product that allows the user to develop and publish interactive data visualizations to the Tableau Public server and embed on a website. All work is saved and published to the Tableau Public web servers and owned by Tableau – nothing is saved locally on your computer.
